The Met x Eichholtz presents the Box Meiji, a refined decorative object inspired by Japanese craftsmanship and symbolism from the Meiji period.

Finished in antique brass, this incense box recalls the elegance of traditional Japanese metalwork. Delicate engravings adorn the lid, adding dimension and authenticity while maintaining a clean, contemporary silhouette.

INSPIRATION

This piece is based on a mid-19th-century incense box from Japan, crafted during the Meiji period (1868–1912). The original, part of The Met collection, features intricately overlapped chrysanthemums, and was used to store incense. Eichholtz’s interpretation brings this object into the modern home with quiet dignity.
